What started off in 2000 as a one off exhibition has now grown into an international business. Bokja (a Turkish word meaning bundle or the piece of fabric) has been well received throughout the Arab world, the US, as well as the French and British markets. A London pop up is currently open in Notting Hill until March 2025.
A Beirut based luxury design collective, Bokja designers Huda Barudi and Maria Hibri, have collected textiles, patterns and colours from around the world. While Baroudi spent much of her life collecting fabrics from the Silk Road, Hibri is a connoisseur of antique furniture. Baroudi (born in Lebanon) and Hibri (born in Beirut) met in the early 2000s through a mutual friend, who recognized their shared passion for textiles.
The two women joined forces, merging their expertise to reupholster vintage furniture found in antique stores and flea markets with precious fabrics from the region.
The brand has many facets of sustainable and ethical practices ranging from recycling to upcycling, from slow design to handmade, with the added value of multiculturalism. The website features Homeware including beautiful embroidered cushions.
In 2020, following the large explosion at the Port of Beirut in Lebanon, the Bokja showroom was transformed into a community centre to help people whose homes were damaged. By allowing them to bring home furnishings for free to repair and re-upholster, the brand hoped to help rebuild a sense of comfort. The artisans used a signature red stitch to sew the pieces back together, inspired from a surgical suture normally used to close and heal wounds on the human body.
Taking a strong collaborative approach, Bokja work closely with interior designers and architects to bring many projects to life. Offering unique expertise in creating tapestries with meaningful narratives, their work can be seen at restaurants, hotels and public spaces.
This Beirut-based design studio crafts narratives through embroidery and textile creating personable objects, furniture and fashion.
