Gabby Deeming was on holiday in India and her head was turned by the piles of brightly coloured block printed cottons for sale. She chose her favourite, took it to a tailor and asked him to make the perfect shirt dress with Nehru collar and pockets. That was the first Daydress.
The styles that I have my eye on for summer are Lucia, and Kitty but there are so many perfect day styles for busy city life, as well as special occasions, including the ‘Anna’ and ‘Lana’.
Gabby always had a love for block-print and began developing her own print patterns for dresses in 2017. She was busy working full time at House & Garden magazine and Daydress was a little side project until 2021 when she launched the British womenswear label full time.
She now spends many happy hours designing the printed patterns for the dresses, skirts and tops and there is a ‘Textile Library’ on the website.
There is also information about designer and artist Ellen Merchant who the brand collaborated with to design the print ‘Chintz Trail’
And Jessica Light who hand wove the collection of raffia belts .
Jessica is the last working passementerie weaver left in London, and her pieces are hand-woven using 15/16th century techniques on a mid 19th-century powered loom that she bought at a car boot sale for £100 over 30 years ago.
Her grandest commission has been the big yellow balcony fringe for Buckingham Palace that is seen at all the Royal occasions.
There are newly launched decorative accessories and more homeware collections coming soon! The beautiful tablecloths would be perfect for summer garden eating.
