Where
Just four miles west of Tetbury – home to the King Charles’ beloved Highgrove – the drive alone dispels any mystery as to why His Majesty is so devoted to the area. All rolling Cotswolds Hills, Calcot’s large estate is a paradise for anyone who likes their nature on the wild side. Think beehives, flower meadows, groves of newly planted trees and a herd of Belted Galloway cattle who graze its green pastures to picturesque effect (Constable would have been in heaven). If you’re coming by train, Kemble is the nearest station. Do note though, at just eleven miles away, the journey cost us more than £50.

What
A classic honey-hued manor in reassuringly hefty Cotswold stone and thronged by herb gardens, its deeply traditional exterior belies the sharp design sensibilities inside. The interiors come courtesy of Nicky Farquhar, whose signature chic rusticity (think neutral palate and an onus on natural textures and materials throughout) make it stand out from the traditional Cotswolds manor house hotel. While it definitely comes down on the cool side of country, we’re pleased to report that it remains distinctly cosy too. On a chilly morning, my daughter and I spent a happy post breakfast half hour snuggling into a sumptuous sofa, reading by the crackle of an open fire. Bliss.

The Welcome
The sight of the warm hues of the building instantly makes one breathe out: this is a place dedicated to comfort and to looking after its guests. On a nippy March day, the pervading smell of woodsmoke is deliciously welcoming, as is the greeting on reception. It’s worth noting, though, that it’s quite a riotous welcome – a gaggle of excited children were busy being exuberant and chattering excitedly (who could blame them?). With our own child in tow, we were cheered by the relaxed vibes and the onus on accommodation to families. Others seeking a quieter entrance might, though, have been put off by the merry cacophony.

The Rooms
There are 35 in all, some of which are housed within the original building while others, like ours, are dotted around the grounds. We were shown to Woodchester, a split-level suite that had us squealing with delight from the off. It is, in essence, our very own mini cottage, complete with a little gate and a sweet front garden that would be perfect for a pre-prandial drink in the warmer months. Wend your way up the path and you’ll find a seductive interior: a huge bed, a small annexe for our daughter complete with its own bunk bed, TV, Toniebox (you can borrow characters from reception) and even her name written in magnets, which was a lovely touch, A trot up the stairs leads you to the most sensational bathroom. Two marble-edged baths sit side by side, while there is also an enormous shower too, all housed under skylit sloping ceilings, which lend a cottagey vibe to the high-level luxury. Bathroom products all come courtesy of British botanical bath and body brand, 100 Acres. Delicious.

The Vibe
Family, family, family. Calcot offers the perfect balance of family-friendly luxury and relaxation. The play barn, an Ofsted-registered creche supervised by kind and experienced staff, is a massive hit with younger guests, and additional services such as babysitting and a baby listening service are available too. There is a playground on site, plus children can enjoy 45-minute swimming sessions each day at 3:45 pm or 4:30 pm, with extra slots on weekends at 8:45 am and 9:30 am. Older children have access to the Mez, an upstairs area of the Playbarn which has PlayStations, Wii consoles, Xboxes, computers and even a 12-seater cinema. A well-rounded experience for families.
Food & Drink
The Brasserie, housed in a charming conservatory, is warm and ambient, the flicker of firelight at its entrance creating an inviting atmosphere. The menu leans towards traditional offerings, with dishes like perfectly cooked sole accompanied by fondant potatoes, and a rich vegetable risotto. Though the service can be a bit inconsistent – we were informed that the kitchen was a little understaffed the night we were in – the food shines through. Breakfast was a real highlight, with a mix of à la carte options (like smoked salmon and scrambled eggs) and a generous buffet spread of Greek yogurt, local honey, fresh pastries, and charcuterie. The Hive, meanwhile, serves up an informal array of lighter bites, from sandwiches and soups to serving platters, as well as early suppers for children.

Don’t Miss
The aforementioned play barn is an absolute must for families, while the spa offers a perfect retreat for those seeking relaxation. Don’t miss the outdoor jacuzzi, surrounded by Box hedge, offering a calming atmosphere that perfectly complements the soothing massages, reviving facials, and expert manicures and pedicures available. If you’re feeling energetic, borrow the many wellies on hand for a good walk across the grounds, or go on a cycle trail.

The Verdict
Calcot & Spa’s perfect blend of family-friendly amenities, luxurious yet relaxed rooms, and spectacular setting makes it an ideal escape for those seeking both relaxation and adventure. Whether you come for a peaceful stroll through the wildflower meadows, to feel revived by a rejuvenating spa treatment, or to dine on locally sourced dishes, Calcot is a place where relaxation and luxury meet the natural beauty of the countryside – a true retreat.
