There is no such thing as the perfect parent, the perfect mother, the perfect family, and parenthood – while wonderful in so many ways – can also be a lonely and difficult business.

Fortunately, we live in an age where the hard bits as well as the good bits are being talked about, so that anyone finding it tough can seek solidarity and support through others.

Just in time for Mothers Day, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite parenting podcasts.

You won’t find any tedious lecturing or pointless pontificating here. Just a mix of funny insights, down-to-earth wisdom and intelligent discussion, relevant even to those who may only be thinking of having children.

Scummy Mummies

From the school What’s App group to a shot pelvic floor to hellish playdates and “f***ing birthday parties”, this amusing podcast from comedians Ellie Gibson and Helen Thorn provides a frank and funny insight into ALL the issues of parenting with a refreshing dollop of self-deprecation and “chill-the-f***-out” wisdom. Featuring guest parenting experts, comedians and authors.

Maybe Baby? Should I have children or not?

A one-off parenting episode from The Guardian’s popular podcast, The Story, this is one for those on the fence about having kids at all. Talking to people in the middle of making the decision, host Leah Green explores sources of doubt (and the therapy that is meant to ease it) while confronting the risks of having a ‘problem child’. Her own mother also makes an appearance with a plead for grandchildren…!

The Longest Shortest Time

Started by This American Life contributor Hillary Frank following the struggle and sense of isolation she experienced after the birth of her own child, The Longest Shortest Time has since morphed into “the parenting show for everyone” covering stories from both parents and non-parents that strive, ultimately, to make us all feel less alone.

The Trap Door

Following in the Slummy Mummy mould, The Trap Door features funny people talking about having children with host Sophie Black. Enjoy wry takes on the nitty-gritty of parenting from guests in the comedy, acting and writing world, who discuss their own journeys through parenthood with a mix of humour and practical wisdom.

Happy Mum Happy Baby

In this excellent podcast, Giovanna Fletcher continues the conversation about motherhood she began in her bestselling novel of the same title. Featuring guests including Amanda Holden, Jack Monro, Candice Braithwaite and others, listeners can enjoy a series of frank and warm conversations about all aspects of parenthood, including money, grief, relationships and other issues.
