Halloween: The Black Widow, the York Dungeon, York

A good spooky theatre makes any Halloween memorable. York Dungeon has opened its new show – just in time– and it’s promising to be the scariest in their history. The Black Widow is the story of Britain’s most notorious female serial killer Mary Ann Cotton. She would lace her teapot with arsenic to kill her victims, but who can refuse her cup of tea? Book it.
Halloween Festival, Warwick Castle, Warwick

It’s dubbed the scariest castle in Britain with haunted history galore – so where better to go than Warwick Castle for Halloween? Every October, it transforms into a spooky wonderland. The Headless Horseman roams around, there’s a witch’s den, a series of Halloween themed live shows and a Spooky School focusing on gory medieval times. Witch’s Potion Trail, Hidcote, Gloucestershire

For a few weeks this autumn, one of the most influential gardens of the 20th-century will host a Halloween-themed ghoulish trail around its grounds. Created to be full of surprises, Hidcote Manor Garden has a maze of narrow pathways and secret gardens. Its spooky Witch’s Potion Trail runs around its infamous linked garden rooms of hedges, rare trees, shrubs and herbaceous borders. All ages are invited to explore the witch’s garden and help find the missing ingredients from her recipe. Book it.
Become a Zombie for a Day at The London Tombs
To really let your hair down this Halloween, buy an immersive experience to become a zombie actor and to scare unsuspecting tourists witless at The London Tombs. After a make-up tutorial to make you look suitably gory and undead, you’ll be kitted out in proper zombie clothes and taught the art of scaring people. Once convincingly gruesome, you’ll join a chorus of flesh-eating zombies at the live shows at the London Tombs. As you wish. Book it.
Spooky Stories and Petrified Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt, Powis Castle, Powys

Ancient castles aren’t short of paranormal vibes, ghost sightings and secret corners, hence making for epic Halloween destinations. Head to Wales to experience first-hand the haunting history and darker side of Powis castle, a 13th century medieval fortress. Broomstick Agility Course, Croft Castle, Herefordshire
