Stuff. We’re all encumbered with it. Easily amassed and far less easily disposed of, one answer to this very modern conundrum lies in not giving physical things to those who already have more than enough when special occasions come around. Opt instead for experiences as your chosen tokens of affection, gratitude and love. If it’s an experience you can share, even better.

This year then, when Mother’s Day rolls around (30th March, FYI), the thing your dear mama will doubtless appreciate most of all is your time – and should that time be spent doing something fun, unusual or creative, then better still. Here, we’ve rounded up a few ideas to inspire your Mother’s Day 2025.

Book Tickets For The Great Gatsby At The London Coliseum

From 11 April until 7 September, The London Coliseum will transform into a paean to 1920s elegance as the Tony Award-winning The Great Gatsby transfers to London from Broadway. This adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novella looks set to be spectacular – and it’s the perfect show to see with your ma. Book it.

Learn To Block Print With Molly Mahon

If your mum is a creative type, why not take her along to one of Molly Mahon’s workshops, which are scattered through the year – and usually at the very loveliest of locations? Choose between napkin, cushion, fabric panel or lampshade workshops, which take place across the likes of Gravetye Manor and Charleston Farmhouse in East Sussex and Ham Court in Oxfordshire. Gorgeous. £225. Book it.

Abba Voyage

If your mum grew up listening to and loving Abba – and you, in turn, were weaned on their music too – then nothing could beat this holographic extravaganza that brings the eternally youthful forms of Agnetha, Anna-Frid, Benny and Bjorn together again forever. If you’ve been before, who cares? Go again! Even as the experience approaches its third birthday, seeing and singing along to this iconic four ‘live’ will never get old. From £38.50. Book it.

Learn To Garden With Sarah Raven At Perch Hill

Sarah Raven’s name is synonymous with the cutting garden and her house at Perch Hill is a cascading, tumbling ode to the classic English country garden – just on a rather grand scale. If you’d like to send your mum (or go together) to learn more about getting the most out of the garden, we highly recommend ‘Bees, honey and fermentation: secrets to a healthy future’ with award-winning River Cottage writer Rachel de Thample, which takes place in June and would make an ideal gift to give on Mother’s Day. Don’t want to do a workshop? Simply look out for open days and visit Perch Hill to dream amongst the dahlias. £195. Book it.

Take A Cookery Class At Borough Kitchen

We love everything about Borough Kitchen, from its buzzy location to the plethora of kitchen gadgets that we never knew we needed but, once seen, simply must own. (In fact, we rate it so highly that Borough Kitchen scooped our Website Of the Year award a few years back.) Another thing to love, though, is its roster of cookery classes, each of them ideal as Mothers’ Day presents. The great news is that they are as varied as they are regular – choose from the likes of Chinese dumpling and bao cooking to foundations of Thai cooking to French patisserie to the principles of bread making – and many, many more besides. We’d enrol on every last one of them if we could. Book it.

Afternoon Tea At Petersham Nurseries

London abounds with options when it comes to afternoon tea. If you want classic, The Savoy, The Ritz, Claridge’s, The Lanesborough and their ilk will never disappoint. But if you want something a little less formal but every bit as gorgeous, do try Petersham Nurseries afternoon tea. Whilst one has always been able to buy tea and cake from the café (always lovely), now Petersham is serving up the full fairy-lit Garden Afternoon Tea, served up on tiered stands with a seasonally changing menu – all of it sprinkled with petals, of course. Expect sandwiches (prosciutto cotto, smoked trout and cream cheese amongst them), scones, and the sweet likes of chocolate pandoro or orange and chocolate Sacher cake, all washed down with fresh loose-leaf tea or Prosecco Millesimato. From £60. Book it.

Aire Ancient Baths

Inspired by ancient Greek, Roman and Ottoman bathing traditions, AIRE ancient baths are so atmospheric that you may never be able to wrench yourself away. Hidden below ground near Covent Garden in a 17th-century Robert Street terrace house, the London addition to this string of spas appeared in 2021 – seventeen years on from its first incarnation in Seville, where the concept was born in a subterranean Roman bath housed below a 16th-century palace. That same spirit lives on in London’s seven baths, some of which bubble softly away, others of which steam and some of which are salty enough to float in. Unlike many modern, more clinical spas, this candlelit thermal retreat offers a warm, historic ambiance – we think time spent here would make a perfect Mother’s Day treat. From £270 for two. Book it.
