While summer is the season to eschew the TV, autumn brings the renewed pleasure that lies in grabbing a blanket, a hot drink and settling in for the night. These shows are all gripping enough to have us glued to the sofa, glorying in the cosier evenings as they draw in.

The Perfect Couple

Feeling flat because the holidays are over? Netflix has just the remedy. Everything about their darkly elegant new series, The Perfect Couple, is promising. Set among the uber wealthy of America’s East Coast, it stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning and Eve Hewson. It is directed by Susanne Bier, whom The Times describes as ‘the Danish art house film-maker turned go-to director for glossy television series’. What’s it about? Private jets, staff in uniform, a society wedding – and a body found floating in the harbour. Available on Netflix from September 5.

Joan

This stylish six-parter, set in 1980s London, stars Sophie Turner as the notorious housewife turned jewel thief, Joan Hannington. Nicknamed The Godmother, Hannington used her looks to distract and disarm as she stole millions of pounds worth of diamonds – in a bid to create a better life for her daughter. Coming to ITVX in September.

Lady In The Lake

Natalie Portman plays her first TV role in this 1960s thriller. The Guardian says: ‘The whole endeavour is a dense, clever, impeccably written, acted, shot and scored offering that is designed to be consumed slowly, episode by episode, not binged.’ The plot? When a child goes missing at a Thanksgiving Day parade the lives of two wildly different women – one a wealthy Jewish housewife; the other a Black single mom – converge. Prepare to fall hard for this show.

The Bear, Season Three

Like many of us, you may have been too busy drinking strawberry daiquiris over the summer to tune into the latest season of The Bear, which The Guardian calls ‘the finest show on TV’. It is not too late. The ongoing saga of Carmy’s battle for a brilliant restaurant will keep you on your toes throughout September.

Presumed Innocent

The other hit series of the summer was Apple TV’s Presumed Innocent, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and his brother-in-law, Peter Sarsgaard. Created by that titan of TV, David E. Kelley, this legal thriller is a remake of the 1990 Harrison Ford movie, which was in turn based on a novel of the same name by Scott Turow. The courtroom drama went down well enough to have been renewed for a second series. Hurrah!

Wolfs

If you’re in the mood for a movie, you will love Wolfs, a fresh new comedy starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney. This time, the divine duo play a pair of rival fixers who have to come together when they are both employed to cover up a murder committed by a prominent New Yorker. Coming to Apple TV+ on September 27.
