Head Candy: Sensational Headboards & Where To Source Them
Aesthetes take note: the fancy headboard is making a big splash in interiors right now.
As all inveterate decorators know, there is and always will be a new cognoscenti-approved must-have item to covet, and thus a shiny new feature around which to build a whole fresh aesthetic. Right now, that item is the headboard, a hitherto neglected aspect of décor for many of us and now suddenly sky-rocketed towards the top of interiors-attuned wish lists everywhere.
And what’s not to love? A good headboard is an arresting way to inject colour into a bedroom, as well as adding softness and comfort. You can, of course, spend thousands; alternatively, you could learn to make one yourself courtesy of Create Academy’s Micaela Sharp course. The median option is of course to shop around for some more affordable options. Here, we gather up some of our favourites at a variety of price points – all in the name of the achieving the sweetest, not to mention prettiest, night’s sleep.

We are loving the collaboration between The Headboard Workshop and Julia Brendel, one of the country’s leading fabric and wallpaper designers. This new collection features our favourite: the Lewis Headboard in Julia Brendel Indian Summer, a design inspired by the architectural flair of Jaipur. Buy it.
Molly Mahon’s jubilant block prints lend themselves especially well to being transformed into headboards. This one, with its punchy red and pink repeat motif, is all warmth and dash. Buy it.
Made to order in Cape Town, we love the expressive painterliness of Hadeda’s double headboard, which is all dressed up in Whiteman & Mellor fabric. Exquisite. Buy it.
OKA’s Sheki design was first used on a rug, having been originally inspired by an antique example spotted in a market. But it was too pretty not to apply it to other settings, hence the creation of the Sheki King Headboard. In true OKA style, it is beautifully made, with its headboard frame having been upholstered with a handmade dhurrie, which is first woven on a handloom to the screen printing and the embroidery. A true everlasting beauty. Buy it.
Classic Piped Headboard Upholstered In Cambridge Blue Pinstripe Fabric, £395
If you’re looking for something fresh and nautical, then the Cotswold Upholstery Company’s pinstripe headboard will give an instant lift to any room. It also does a good line in Ikat examples at reasonable prices too, which are very well worth exploring. Buy it.
We love how graphic and arresting this fabric would look on a headboard, its mottled turquoise cut through with exquisite Ikat lines. The perfect way to pep up a staid bedroom. Buy it.
Bespoke Super King Upholstered Headboard, £650
We cannot resist a pink zigzag for sheer delight, and this handmade headboard from Ottie’s Shop ticks all of our boxes. Perfect for adding pizzazz to a simple room, or for slipping seamlessly into a bohemian maximal scheme. Buy it.
The vogue for rattan has been standing its ground for a good handful of years now. And so, for something completely different, do consider a made-to-order wicker headboard – what it lacks in softness and comfort, it more than makes up for in the showstopping stakes. Buy it.
Another striped beauty, another Jane Clayton knock-out. The pink and orange medley is pure joy, and is loosened beautifully with the scattering of zig zags between the lines. An absolutely cast-iron mood enhancer. Buy it.
If you have the headboard itself and you simply want to re-cover it, then look no further than Etsy, which has a host of inexpensive options. We especially like this endlessly fresh French stripe, which would lift any bedroom. Buy it.
