Geometric patterns, subtle hues or matching bikinis may appeal on Insta but savvy parents now know better. The colour of a swimsuit can save a life. Just look at the latest science behind which swimsuits are safest for your child.

It only takes a couple of seconds for a child to slip silently out of sight in a busy pool or in the sea. Recently, various coloured and patterned swimsuits were tested to determine which ones are most visible in dark bottom water by Natalie Livingston from ALIVE solutions, an aquatic safety expert. The research showed how colours change when submerged underwater. What swimmers wear in the water can make all the difference in potentially reducing response times and averting an emergency.

Livingston’s verdict is that neon colours, either solid, colour-blocked or with small prints, offer the highest level of visibility in dark or blue water.

Livingston’s verdict is that neon colours, either solid, colour-blocked or with small prints, offer the highest level of visibility in dark or blue water. The next best were small printed patterns. Darker colours blend into the environment and pose a higher risk of being overlooked, increasing the potential for accidents, especially in crowded swimming pools. While lighter colours look like reflections on the surface, blues, greys and white swimwear is tough to see in the water.

‘Bright colours are not only super engaging and fun for kids, but a critical consideration for water safety,’ says Kirstie Duke, co-founder of Töastie. ‘Where pale colours virtually disappear, and dark colours can be mistaken for shadows, vibrant, contemporary colour-blocking designs give maximum visibility in the water. Being able to immediately spot your little one on land or water is a huge win.’
