Spare a thought for the incredible work of the charitable sector this Christmas (however beleaguered you may be feeling yourself). We remain awed by their staying power in the face of endless threats and by their drive to do good in the world. We could single out hundreds that deserve your support but, here, we suggest just seven who could do with whatever you can spare.

On any given day, Refuge’s services help thousands of women and children escape the impact of domestic abuse and rebuild their lives without fear. This Christmas, hundreds of children will wake up in one of Refuge’s 53 centres across the country. Your donation to the charity could buy stocking fillers, a delicious Christmas dinner or even a tree complete with twinkling decorations. Donate here.

Age UK

Last year, 2.3 million older people in the UK said they wished they’d had somebody to spend Christmas with. Many go for days if not weeks without speaking to another soul. Age UK’s Telephone Friendship Service is a lifeline to many. As they say, no one should have no one. Donate here.

Driving Ukraine

In Ukraine, where war has been raging since February 2022, the evacuation of a wounded person is attempted every nine minutes. Driving Ukraine works tirelessly to provide the vehicles and medical supplies to make each of those attempts a success. The charity’s very simple method is to: fundraise for a vehicle; drive it across Europe; and deliver it to those who need it in Ukraine. Donate here.

The Brain Tumour Charity

The Brain Tumour Charity is the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours globally. They are striving for a world in which brain tumours are defeated. The more support they get, the further and faster they can travel towards this goal. Their online Christmas shop, where you can buy nice homewares, gifts and decorations, whose proceeds go towards research, is open. We particularly like the Festive Holly Dog Collar. Donate here.
