Their pursuit of the perfect scent started in their childhood and has become a lifelong quest to capture the seasons in a bottle.
Owen and Emily grew up in a small village on the lower levels of Exmoor, Somerset. The rural landscape surrounded them and across the road from their house was an organic herb farm owned by a family friend.
The first fragrance was released in winter 2018 and now, four times a year, at each solstice and equinox, Ffern issues a new scent for the season ahead. The perfumes are composed by the renowned French fifth-generation nose, François Robert, and his protégé Elodie Durande. At the heart of each fragrance is a distinctive woodiness, a house style that they want people to recognise.
Each season, one bottle of fragrance is made for each person on the ledger. Having a ledger of clients allows them to remain traditional and operate a small batch production process - reducing waste. The ledger is currently full, but if you sign up to the waiting list, they let you know when a space becomes available.
Ffern's Soho store is the first physical outpost. At 23 Beak Street, those who aren’t on the ledger can experience the fragrances first-hand, while leger members can stop by and revisit some of their past favourites in the store's archive room.
Ffern is currently the only zero-plastic perfume brand. Impossible to find a hard non plastic lid, the bottle comes in a lidded cardboard tube. A natural fragrance maker, each bottle of fragrance contains at least 95% natural fragrance oils, derived from plants using techniques that are sometimes centuries old.
Summer 24 is an organic eau de parfum composed of 19 natural ingredients, twice aged and bottled in Somerset, England. Each bottle costs £89 - this includes postage, sampling kit and a returns label. Once on the ledger, you’re free to leave at any time - but if you choose to stay, your space is guaranteed for life. Each fragrance arrives with a complimentary sample vial for you to try at home before deciding whether or not to keep the main bottle.
Ffern was launched in 2017 by brother and sister Owen Mears and Emily Cameron.
