When it comes to beauty sleep, the fabric your face rests on can make all the difference. Silk pillowcases have gained popularity for their luxurious feel, but they also offer benefits that go far beyond comfort.

Unlike cotton, which can be rough on your skin and hair, silk provides a smooth, frictionless surface that helps prevent wrinkles, reduce hair breakage, and even promotes better sleep. As a non-absorbent fabric, the moisturising benefits of nightly skincare routines are more effective, since your skin retains the benefits – rather than simply sinking into your pillow. And, as far as hair is concerned, with no static, the dreaded frizz is eradicated, and individual strands are protected from breakage, making sleek hair instantly more achievable.

Unlike cotton, which can be rough on your skin and hair, silk provides a smooth, frictionless surface that helps prevent wrinkles, reduce hair breakage, and even promotes better sleep.

If that were not enough to convince even the most acutely pea-discerning of princesses, then the added benefits may just do the trick: as well as aiding beauty sleep, silk pillows are also conducive to better health, being temperature-controlling and breathable thus helping you to get a better and cooler night’s sleep, as well as also being hypoallergenic, for which sensitive skin will thank you.

None of this comes cheap, of course. However, despite the higher price tag, we’d argue that the long-term benefits make silk pillowcases a worthwhile investment for anyone hoping to enhance their nightly routine – though a note: not all silk pillows are created equal. Do look for 100 per cent mulberry silk and a momme level of over nineteen.

With that in mind, here is our pick of the best silk pillows.

Maintaining Your Silk Pillows

Washing silk products requires special care to maintain their delicate fibres and luxurious feel. Here’s how to wash silk effectively:

Hand Washing

The best method is to hand wash silk in cold water. Use a basin filled with cool water and add a small amount of silk-specific detergent. Gently swirl the fabric in the water for a few minutes, avoiding rubbing too hard or wringing, as this can damage the fibres.

Machine Washing

If you must use a washing machine, place the silk item in a mesh laundry bag to protect it. Use a gentle or delicate cycle with cold water, and only a small amount of mild detergent, ensuring it is specifically designed for silk.

Drying

Never wring out silk. Instead, gently press the water out by rolling the item in a clean, dry towel. Lay it flat on another towel to air dry, away from direct sunlight or heat sources, which can weaken the fibres and cause fading.

Ironing

If necessary, iron silk on the reverse side while it is still slightly damp, using the lowest heat setting. It’s often best to place a cloth between the silk and the iron to avoid direct heat.
