5 Acids To Add To Your Skincare Routine To Brighten Winter Skin
Naturally derived acids can offer a wealth of benefits for our skin – especially through the gruelling cold
Through the winter months, cold temperatures, icy winds and low humidity can leave skin dull and dry or red and reactive, spiking conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Frequent changes to our environment’s temperature, from cosy centrally heated homes to icy blasts, can also play havoc with our skin’s oil production, causing blocked pores and breakouts.
Incorporating naturally derived acids into your skincare routine can help to gently resurface skin to reveal a brighter complexion, as well as treat hyperpigmentation, blemishes and inflammation. With the weaker winter sun, now is also a great time to introduce acids to your facial routine as they can cause sun sensitivity. As always, don’t skip your daily SPF.
We’ve rounded up five acids to try adding to your skincare routine this winter for a range of benefits – plus our recommendations for the best products to buy.

Lactic Acid
Derived from milk, lactic acid gently exfoliates, promoting cell turnover for bouncier, smoother skin. This AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) helps reduce fine lines, fade hyperpigmentation and hydrate the skin by acting as a moisture magnet.
Glycolic Acid
A potent AHA extracted from sugarcane, glycolic acid penetrates deeply, exfoliating dead skin cells and should be used with caution once or twice a week. Start with a low percentage formulation to test your skin’s sensitivity. It can help to improve texture, minimise pores, and stimulate collagen production, resulting in a smoother, brighter complexion.
Salicylic Acid
A beta hydroxy acid (BHA), salicylic acid unclogs pores, reduces inflammation and regulates oil production. A super effective acid for teen skins to combat both existing blemishes and future breakouts.
Azelaic Acid
Azelaic acid, found in grains, brightens the skin by inhibiting melanin production. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it an effective treatment for skin conditions such as rosacea.
Fulvic Acid
Fulvic acid, sourced from organic matter, boasts antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. It can help to detox skin, increase nutrient absorption and improve the skin’s elasticity for some much needed winter glow.
