Compelling, beguiling, and, according to Nigella, “the class A drug of the confectionery world”, when it comes to salted confectionery, we are as weak and self-indulgent as the next person.

More than two years since that photo was taken, we are still transfixed by this flavour combination and with this in mind, here are some of our go-to sweet and salty recipes.

Nigella Lawson: Bacon Brownies
www.nigella.com

The world’s number one fan of salted puddings has successfully made the case for Bacon Brownies with this fabulous recipe.
She says: “These sound odder than they taste. Think deep, dark, fudgey chocolate, flecked with caramelised salty shards.” Sold.

David Leibovitz: Salted Caramel Ice-cream
www.davidlebovitz.com

The author of “Perfect Scoop: Ice Creams, Sorbets, Granitas, and Sweet Accompaniments”, David Leibovitz, advises using a good quality salt such as fleur de sel for his epic Salted Caramel Ice-cream.
He says: “It’s not difficult to make good caramel but the secret is to cook it far enough so it’s slightly burnt. You want to take the sugar right to the edge of darkness, then stop it there with the addition of a few cubes of salted butter.”

Jamie Oliver: Rich Chocolate Tart with Salt Flakes
www.jamieoliver.com

According to Jamie, this beautifully smooth salted tart is “easy to knock up but the addition of salt magically brings out the sweetness”. Amen.
Trudy from blog, Mediterrasian Kitchen is a big fan of miso in puddings. She says: “Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! Sweet dishes are often balanced by a touch of salt, and miso adds a unique depth of flavour and subtle saltiness to this recipe.”

Drizzle and Drip: Toffee, Salted Pretzel and Chocolate Bark
www.drizzleanddip.com

Adapted from her book ‘Sweet’, this recipe for Toffe, Salted Pretzel and Chocolate Bark from South African blogger, Sam Linsell is extremely addictive. She says: I took my favourite crunchy toffee recipe – that totally melts in your mouth, and added salted pretzels to it, because I mean, who doesn’t love that?”

Clodagh McKenna: Salted Caramel Whiskey Bread and Butter Pudding
www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink

No British childhood is complete with out Bread and Butter pudding. Here is the grown-up version. Clodagh says: “The salted caramel whiskey sauce is addictive and could also be poured over ice cream to make an Irish sundae.” Help us.
