Last week we shared how the big UK brands were stepping up to help the NHS – providing PPE, life-saving ventilators and special care packages to front-line workers. This week we look to those small and mighty independent businesses of Britain valiantly helping to support NHS charities and workers in some way, whether through donations or charity products.
We will update this article weekly, so if you run a small business doing big things for the NHS and would like to be featured, please do email lydia@thegoodwebguide.co.uk with ‘NHS’ in the subject line.
Castle Farm
Family-run Castle Farm in Kent cultivates its own lavender fields, the harvest from which is then distilled on-site into aromatherapy products and toiletries. While the farm shop is closed, it is focusing its attentions online, offering four isolation care packs featuring farm-grown lavender essential oil. Lavender has been used for centuries as an antiseptic and anti-viral remedy, as well as to help reduce anxiety and aid sleep. Choose from a ‘Kentish Care Pack’, which contains Castle Farm’s famous lavender honey, handmade biscuits and even lavender grey tea. Or try a ‘Kids Care Pack’ with fun activities, a cuddly toy and edible treats. For every care pack sold, a bottle of lavender oil will be donated to a local NHS worker (eighty have been distributed so far), to provide a little relaxation and escapism.
Leith and Gray
Leith and Gray provides stylish boxed gifts for all sorts of occasions – from pampering kits, to stylish gent’s boxes and fun sets for kids – all beautifully packaged and delivered on your behalf. During lockdown they are supporting the Blue Light Card initiative, which gives a discount to emergency services, NHS and Armed Forces on a range of brands. Leith and Gray is offering a 15 per cent discount on all orders to Blue Light Card holders to help them shop for gifts for loved ones quickly and easily.
Made The Edit
Made The Edit is an independent women’s footwear brand in south-west London, which works directly with family-run ateliers in both Italy and Spain to create beautiful quality shoes that will become wardrobe staples for years to come. It also curates an edit of fashion and accessory brands that share the same ethos of timeless quality and understated style. During lockdown it is donating 10 per cent of Made The Edit sales to NHS Charities Together.
Bloom & Wild
The letterbox flower delivery service Bloom & Wild is giving NHS frontline workers, social carers, emergency services and armed forces 40 per cent off its mood-boosting blooms. You can also nominate a key worker to win a free bouquet, with 10 chosen by the team each week. Finally, it is also donating 15 per cent of profits to the National Emergencies Trust Coronavirus Appeal, with each bouquet bought from the ‘our florist’s pick’ range.
Hotel Chocolat
Luxury independent chocolatier, Hotel Chocolat is offering a scrumptious 50 per cent off to NHS workers in need of a sugar fix. Whether it’s for some self-care supplies or to use for a gift for a loved one, the sustainably sourced confections are the perfect pick-me-up right now.
Upcircle
Sustainable beauty brand Upcircle is putting together care packages to send out to NHS staff in need of some TLC. Email hello@upcirclebeauty.com to be notified when nomination entries are opened to vote for your NHS hero to receive a selection of their upcycled skincare. Upcircle uses the waste from the food industry, from coffee grounds to fruit stones, to create vegan, cruelty-free beauty.
Missoma
Modern luxury jeweller Missoma has launched a specially designed ‘Round of Applause’ necklace, which they will be gifting to one hundred NHS workers as a token of thanks for all their hardwork. The brand will also be donating 100 per cent of its profits from any Round of Applause necklaces sold to NHS Charities Together.
