Sophie Warburton is a London-based stylist and creative consultant. She is Style Director at The Daily Telegraph, and founder of homeware retailer Host, which we adore for its glorious use of colour and its peculiarly British aesthetic, which is to say that all it purveys is touched with a slight but completely joyful decorative eccentricity.

The concept was born when Sophie was decorating her own house and spotted a gap in the market. Ever on the lookout for the kinds of things she wanted to fill it with, she found the high street too homogenous, while the high end was simply too expensive. We love Host’s constant evolution; Sophie is always scouring the world and the web for new products and collaborators – an approach that imbues it with the exciting sense that it is a perennially unfolding, thrillingly live place to be.

Here, ever the brilliant host, Sophie shows us round her digital haunts, sharing the brands she’s found and the people she’s met online, and why you can now rely on her for informed basketball punditry on top of her other myriad litany of skills. Slam dunk.

My favourite website...

Google. Is that allowed? It's the gateway to the world as we know it.

My favourite app...

Instagram. It's such a brilliant way to connect with people, and to source new designers and makers. It, of course, has its downsides though.

My favourite blog...

I'm not a huge follower of blogs but I love Bible of British Taste and Directorio Deco. I also think what Alex Steadman does on The Frugality is so clever.

My Internet hero...

Tim Berners-Lee!

My favourite podcast...

I love podcasts. I always have them – or Radio 4 – on in the background. The Daily by the New York Times is my go-to, but I’m also loving How I Built This, How to Fail and Owning it at the moment.

My favourite YouTuber...

I tend to use YouTube for troubleshooting – cooking and DIY – so don’t follow anyone in particular.

My most recent buy online...

An hour’s tennis at our local courts! It’s safe to say that lockdown has changed my spending habits quite considerably.

Last book you downloaded or read...

The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng. It’s been on our bookshelf for years, and is one of my husband’s favourites, so I thought it was about time I read it

Favourite tweeter...

I find Twitter, on the whole, quite a negative place.

Favourite Instagrammer...

@somewhereiwouldliketolive is excellent for escapism.

Favourite tech gadget...

I don’t think I could choose between my MacBookPro and my Google Pixel phone. I deserted iPhones a few years ago and never looked back

The most useful gadget/item on your desk...

I am obsessed with stationery so most of the things on my desk are pretty useless but look great. The most useful thing is probably a charger.

Most useful digital resource during lockdown...

Kahoot, a ‘game-based learning platform’ has been great. We have team quizzes every Friday and we use Kahoot for them.

Most inspirational digital resource during lockdown...

You can’t beat a news website. I oscillate between The Telegraph, The New York Times, BBC...

First thing/app you look at on your mobile when you wake up/in the morning...

My Garmin app to see how many hours I slept.

Last thing you binge-watched...

I’ve just finished The Last Dance and loved it. I’ve become a basketball armchair pundit.

Favourite brands have you discovered online...

The list is too long. I have recently stumbled across Birger Kaipiainen though, who was the most amazing Finnish ceramicist. It’s amazing what you find when you go down the rabbit hole.

Social media allowed me to meet...

The incredibly talented Polly Fern, who I recently collaborated with.

The best digital advice I've been given...

Don’t have the same password for everything. Boring but useful. And yes, I do spend my life clicking the ‘forgotten password?’ button.

My screensaver is...

A photo from my wedding day. What a cliché.

My pet online hate is...

Cc-ing too many people into emails. Nothing ever gets done.

Do you have any online rules or resolutions?

I try to stick to no phones in the bedroom. Easier said than done.

The Internet. On balance, a force for good or ill?

Good. For sure. We’d still be sending faxes without it!
